About This Spot

Stepping into LJ's Sports Tavern & Grill, you’re immediately welcomed by an inviting, unpretentious vibe where the focus is on enjoying the game and gathering with friends in a comfortable setting. Nestled just across from Madison’s Breese Stevens Field, this is the kind of neighborhood spot where the atmosphere pulses quietly with anticipation — whether it’s the buzz of a big match or the steady rhythm of regulars stopping by after work.

The tavern strikes a balance between laid-back and lively, populated with plenty of screens that keep the energy focused without overwhelming the space. The crowd moves at an easy pace, conversations ebbing and flowing around the shared excitement of sports and good company. There’s a familiar warmth here, from the friendly greetings at the door to the steady hum of activity in the dining area, making it a reliable place to settle in for an evening without fuss.

The menu reflects this approachable attitude, offering hearty, familiar fare with just enough variety to satisfy different tastes without complicating the experience. Whether you’re drawn in by crispy cheese curds, a perfectly grilled chicken sandwich, or a generous portion of fried lake perch, the food feels thoughtfully crafted to pair well with a cold beer or a simple cocktail. The drinks list supports this too, featuring everything from local drafts to classic crowd-pleasers, ensuring the right sip is never far away.

It’s a space where casual meets careful, where attentive staff work to keep things running smoothly amid the ebb and flow of game nights and weekend crowds. Your table might come with a side of lively sports chatter and the occasional cheers from nearby — the soundtrack to a place that’s less about flair and more about shared moments, relaxed enjoyment, and a genuine connection to Madison’s local rhythm.

This sports bar is a solid spot if you’re looking for a casual dine in to catch a game. The atmosphere isn’t overly fancy but it’s comfortable, with plenty of TVs, and games to keep up with all the action. Service can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on how busy it gets, but overall the staff is friendly enough. The restaurant has many food selection—there’s a wide variety to choose from, from classic wings, fish and Chips and burgers to a few lighter options. Everything is reasonably priced and portions are fair, making it a good go-to when you just want a relaxed sports bar experience. I’d recommend it if you’re nearby and want a dependable place to watch the game with decent eats.

Food was above average for a sports bar. I ordered the blackened chicken wrap. It was a little small but good tasting, but the side of broccoli cheese soup was excellent. My wife got the beef quesadilla, which was excellent. My Octoberfest beer from 3 Sheeps was excellent. Service was also excellent. I generally prefer taprooms to brewpubs because I think they have better beers since they can pick best of breed from multiple breweries. I can definitely recommend this place for good casual dining and watching sports.

We stopped here prior to the Nathaniel Rateliff concert right across the street at the soccer field. It was busy as can be, but our waitress was so efficient trying to handle all of the pre concert people. They had a guy right at the entry door welcoming us and everyone as well as on our way out he thanked us for coming. Great management! We didn't get to stay long, but if we return to Madison, we will. The food looked great but we just didn't have time with the concert time.

LJ'S is a sports bar and grill right across the street from Breese Stevens field. It wasn't busy when we got there but picked up quickly. We got cheese curds which were plentiful and good. Our table got a burger, chicken ranch wrap, chicken strips and salad. The fries were good too.

Solid sport bar with tv to watch sports. Good bar food like any other bar. Plenty of seats. Good variety of draft beer.
